In the fading light of a Friday afternoon in east Macon, Georgia, a sequence of events unfolded that would tragically end the life of 20-year-old Kemani Ridgeway. On January 9, 2015, at approximately 4 p.m., Ridgeway, accompanied by his girlfriend, drove to Tredway Drive near Shurling Drive. They stopped their vehicle beside a vacant building adjacent to a gas station, where three men were gathered.
Ridgeway exited the car to engage in a conversation with the three individuals. The nature of their discussion remains unclear, but it escalated to a point of no return. During the interaction, one of the men produced a firearm and shot Ridgeway in the chest. Following the shooting, he was rushed to a local hospital, but the gravity of his injury proved to be fatal, and he died later that evening. The male victim's death was ruled a homicide.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts quickly led to a significant breakthrough in the case. A 16-year-old, Demarcus Smith, was identified as the suspected shooter and was subsequently arrested. Despite his age, the severity of the crime led to the decision to charge him as an adult. Smith faced charges of murder and engaging in criminal street gang activity, as authorities stated the shooting was connected to a local gang. Following his arrest, he was taken to the county's Regional Youth Detention Center.
