Melissa Lee Ball, a 27-year-old Caucasian female from Dalton, Georgia, was tragically killed on Thursday, April 23, 2015, in Varnell, Georgia. Her life was taken by her ex-boyfriend, 36-year-old Christopher Eric Whitmore, in a horrific murder-suicide that also claimed the life of their 8-year-old son, Grayden Lee Whitmore. The violent encounter occurred around 7:00 p.m.
in the parking lot of a Shell gas station and McDonald's on Cleveland Highway.
The relationship between Melissa and Whitmore had been fraught with turmoil for over a decade. According to Melissa's sister, Mandi Ball, Melissa had endured a long pattern of mental and physical abuse at the hands of Whitmore. The couple had recently separated, and Melissa had moved in with her grandmother to escape the abusive environment. In the time leading up to the fatal shooting, Melissa had expressed her fears and was actively seeking help. She had been in contact with the local district attorney's domestic violence unit and had planned to meet with them to obtain a temporary protective order against Whitmore.
The night of the incident, Melissa had arranged to meet Whitmore at the gas station to pick up their son. Investigators determined that after Melissa arrived, Whitmore parked his vehicle directly behind hers. Both got out of their cars and approached the back of Whitmore's vehicle. It was there that Whitmore brandished a handgun and shot their son, who was sitting in the back seat. He then immediately shot Melissa before taking his own life. All three were found with gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
The tragedy sent shockwaves through the community, with family and friends expressing their profound grief. Mandi Ball recounted the tumultuous history of her sister's relationship, stating that Whitmore had threatened to kill Melissa on multiple occasions. She described him as controlling and mentally abusive, and expressed regret that they couldn't get Melissa out of the situation sooner. Though there were no domestic violence charges on his record, Whitmore had previous arrests for theft, fraud, and a probation violation. As the perpetrator, Christopher Eric Whitmore, died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trials. The community mourned the loss of Melissa and her young son, leaving behind a memorial of stuffed animals and heartfelt messages at the site of the tragedy.
