In a heart-wrenching incident in Atlanta, Georgia, a cheerful and bright 6-year-old girl named Ja'Mecca Smith lost her life in what police have described as a tragic accident. The young girl, who was a first-grade honor roll student known for her love of 'Frozen' and a gap-toothed smile, was the youngest of seven children. Her life was cut short on a Saturday morning in November 2015, inside her family's apartment in southeast Atlanta.
On that morning, while in her father's home with at
least four other children and two adults present, Ja'Mecca discovered a loaded handgun tucked between the cushions of a sofa. In a devastating turn of events, the young girl accidentally shot herself in the head. When police responded to the scene just before 11 a.m., they found Ja'Mecca deceased. This incident was one of a string of similar tragedies involving children and unsecured firearms in Georgia around that time.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Ja'Mecca's 25-year-old father, Demarqo Smith, briefly fled the apartment before returning to speak with detectives. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He was held at the Fulton County jail without bond. Friends of the father described him as a loving parent who was also devastated by the loss, calling it a 'harsh accident but it was an honest accident.' The tragic event left Ja'Mecca's mother, who was not present at the time of the shooting, and other family members inconsolable.
