On June 24, 1997, 48-year-old Priscilla Culberson was reported missing from Atlanta, Georgia, when she failed to appear for her job. The search for her began, led by concerned family members after they were unable to get in touch with her. The initial discovery in the case was grim, as her purse and other personal items were found, bloodied and discarded, along Campbelton Road in Atlanta.
The search came to a tragic end when Culberson's own 20-year-old daughter discovered her mother's nude body later that same night in a wooded lot near a MARTA bus stop in the southwest part of the city.
The subsequent investigation into the death of the female victim revealed she had been brutally raped, strangled, and beaten. Investigators at the scene collected crucial evidence, including semen and blood samples. It was clear from the evidence that Culberson had fiercely fought back against her attacker, as some of the blood found on her clothing belonged to her assailant. Despite these initial findings, the case went cold for nearly a decade, leaving her family without answers and her killer at large. A break in the case finally came in 2005 when investigators re-examined the evidence using advancements in DNA technology.
The DNA profile created from the semen sample found at the scene was matched to a man named Charles Lee Duffy. At the time of the match, Duffy was already serving a life sentence in a Georgia State Prison for the murders of two other women, which he committed just weeks after killing Culberson. Faced with the undeniable DNA evidence, Duffy confessed to the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Priscilla Culberson. In 2007, Charles Lee Duffy, a Norcross man, pleaded guilty to malice murder. A Fulton County Superior Court judge sentenced him to another life sentence without the possibility of parole, finally bringing a measure of justice to Priscilla Culberson's family ten years after her life was tragically cut short.
