In the evening of December 16, 2015, the life of 22-year-old Darwyn Jaleel Taylor was tragically cut short in Columbus, Georgia. An African American male, Taylor was discovered shot to death inside a car parked outside an apartment complex on Riverland Drive. Emergency services were called to the scene, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The nature of his death immediately prompted a homicide investigation by local law enforcement.
The investigation into Taylor's death led to the identification and arrest of four suspects. Among the first to be taken into custody were 16-year-old Kenjerald Jordan and 20-year-old Dantrell Sims, who were both charged with murder. Subsequently, 20-year-old Jaleel Merritt and 19-year-old Jacorion Gary were also apprehended and faced murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation suggested that Taylor was the intended target and that a violent altercation had escalated, leading to his death. It is believed the suspects had previous interactions with him.
During their initial court appearances, all four suspects entered pleas of not guilty to the charges brought against them. The case drew considerable attention from the local community, sparking conversations about gun violence and the involvement of young people in criminal activities. Darwyn Jaleel Taylor was remembered by his family and friends as a hardworking individual with a promising future, who was employed at Kysor Warren Heatcraft at the time of his death.
