In the summer of 2017, a dispute over a seemingly trivial matter tragically escalated, ending the life of 32-year-old Robert Lockhart, a Black male, in Columbus, Georgia. The events of July 22, 2017, would lead to a full-scale homicide investigation and a subsequent murder trial that centered on a claim of self-defense.
The incident unfolded at the residence of Eddie Clayton, who would later be identified as the suspect in Lockhart's death.
An argument ignited between the two men, reportedly over cigarettes. The verbal confrontation quickly turned violent, with accounts suggesting that Lockhart began to physically assault Clayton inside his own home. In the midst of the struggle, Clayton retrieved a handgun.
According to the defense presented in court, Clayton's intention was to de-escalate the situation by brandishing the weapon. However, the altercation continued, with Lockhart allegedly rushing at Clayton. In the ensuing chaos, Clayton fired his weapon, striking Lockhart. Despite being shot, Lockhart was able to leave the residence and get into a car. He was later pronounced dead from the gunshot wounds.
