Jermaine Thirkield, an 18-year-old Black male, was killed in a shooting on the evening of Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in Columbus, Georgia. The incident occurred around 7:21 p.m. at the intersection of Macon Road and Schatulga Road. When Columbus Police officers arrived at the scene, they found two male victims with gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Jermaine Thirkield was pronounced deceased at 8:28 p.m. by an emergency room doctor.
The second victim was reported to be in critical condition and was taken into surgery for his injuries.
As of now, the death of Jermaine Thirkield is considered an unsolved homicide by the Columbus Police Department, and there have been no arrests made in connection with the shooting. No suspects have been publicly identified in his murder.
In a separate and later incident, a man named Steven Verrett, who was an employee at Navy Federal Credit Union, was arrested in May 2024 on multiple counts of fraud. Verrett was accused of using Jermaine Thirkield's identity to deposit fraudulent checks into his account and create a new debit card after his death. However, authorities have stated that there is no indication that Verrett was involved in Thirkield's murder.
