In the spring of 2021, a young man's life was cut short in Columbus, Georgia, over a transaction that turned deadly. Devion Miley, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on the night of May 8, 2021. The events leading to his death began with a plan to sell marijuana to two individuals, Zajaliq Riley and Detric Bush. The meeting took place at a motel, but complications with the payment arose, prompting the trio to leave in a vehicle driven by Riley, ostensibly to find a better Wi-Fi signal at a
nearby restaurant to complete the transaction.
The drive, however, took a fatal turn. Before reaching their supposed destination, Riley stopped the car and ordered Miley to get out. As Miley was exiting the vehicle, Riley, who was 20 years old at the time, fired the shot that would end Miley's life. The cause of death was later determined to be a gunshot wound to the torso. The investigation into the homicide led police to identify Riley and Bush as the primary suspects. Both men were subsequently arrested and faced charges related to the murder.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Zajaliq Riley was tried for the murder of Devion Miley. In August 2023, a jury found the 22-year-old Riley guilty of felony murder. The court sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole, in addition to a five-year sentence for a firearm charge. His co-defendant, Dietrich Bush, chose a different legal path. He accepted a plea deal from the state, which involved testifying against Riley. In exchange for his testimony, the murder charge against Bush was dropped, and he received a sentence of 15 years probation and credit for time served.
