On New Year's Day in 2016, the life of 36-year-old Kawammi Jackson, an African American male, was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. His body was discovered on the front porch of a residence in the 400 block of West 60th Street just before 4 p.m. He had been fatally shot, and authorities immediately began treating the case as a homicide.
The investigation swiftly pointed to an acquaintance of Jackson's, 32-year-old Ronnie Nicholson. A warrant for murder was issued for Nicholson's arrest. The day after the discovery of Jackson's body, on January 2, 2016, the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Nicholson without incident. He was subsequently transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.
Further investigation into the events leading up to the shooting revealed that Nicholson had allegedly made terroristic threats against the staff of a local establishment, the Crystal Beer Parlor, prior to the murder. This led to the restaurant temporarily closing for safety reasons until he was in custody. In addition to the murder charge, Nicholson also faced charges related to these threats. The death of Kawammi Jackson was mourned by the community, with funeral services held at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
