On December 8, 1986, a tragic mass murder occurred in Oakland, California, claiming the life of 4-year-old Dwayne Miller among others. The incident took place in the early morning hours when David Esco Welch, a 28-year-old heroin and cocaine dealer, broke into a home on Pearmain Street. Welch, accompanied by his girlfriend Rita Lewis, was driven by a combination of personal vendettas and a violent disposition.
Welch's primary target was his ex-girlfriend, 16-year-old Dellane Mabrey, and her family, whom he blamed for various grievances, including the death of one of his pit bulls.
Welch and Lewis forcibly entered the home and proceeded to shoot six people, including two toddlers, as they slept. Among the victims were Dellane Mabrey, her 3-year-old daughter Valencia Morgan, Dellane's brothers Sean and Darnell Mabrey, family friend Kathy Walker, and Kathy's 4-year-old son, Dwayne Miller. The brutality of the attack was underscored by the fact that all the victims were shot in the head at close range while they were asleep. Welch's rampage was fueled by his anger over the breakup with Dellane and his resentment towards her family, particularly her mother, Barbara Mabrey, who had opposed their relationship.
The aftermath of the massacre saw Welch and Lewis fleeing the scene, but they were apprehended by a police assault team nine hours later. Welch was subsequently charged with six counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, as two individuals, Leslie Morgan and Dexter Mabrey, survived the attack despite being wounded. Welch was convicted and sentenced to death in 1989, and he remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison. Rita Lewis, his accomplice, received a sentence of 51 years to life imprisonment for her role in the murders.
