In the early morning hours of February 28, 2016, a 911 call was made from a residence in Bethlehem, Georgia, by a man reporting that his wife had been accidentally shot. Responding deputies from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office arrived at the Moss Side Drive home to find 29-year-old Heather Harrison with a gunshot wound to her head. She was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injury.
The husband, 36-year-old Kevin Harrison, initially told investigators that the shooting was an accident. However, as detectives with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office delved deeper into the case, the evidence at the scene and Kevin Harrison's own statements began to contradict his initial account. Investigators noted that the angles he described did not align with a plausible reenactment of the event, and holes in his story became apparent. It was later revealed that in the months leading up to the shooting, Heather had expressed her unhappiness in the marriage to friends and family, citing her husband's jealous and controlling behavior. She had made plans to leave him and seek a divorce.
Based on the inconsistencies in his story and the evidence collected, investigators concluded that the shooting was not accidental. Kevin Harrison was arrested and charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, murder, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The couple's young toddler was reportedly at home at the time of the shooting. Subsequently, Kevin Harrison was convicted of murdering his wife. He was sentenced to life in prison. An appeal of his conviction was later denied by the Georgia Supreme Court.
