In the late hours of a warm August night in 2016, Darian Vashawn Brewster, a 34-year-old Black man known to his friends as 'D-Roc,' was enjoying a night out in his hometown of Macon, Georgia. After spending time at the Back Porch Lounge, he and three female companions made their way to Club Dreams, a downtown nightclub on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The evening, however, would take a tragic and irreversible turn in the early morning hours of August 20th.

Shortly after arriving at Club Dreams, as Brewster sat in the driver's seat of his car, he was approached by a man who asked for a cigarette lighter. When Brewster declined the request, the man produced a firearm and shot him once in the chest. Despite his grave injury, Brewster managed to drive away from the scene. As his condition worsened, one of his passengers, Sandra Thomas, took over the wheel and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Tragically, the efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into Brewster's death quickly identified Quentin Mccorey Jackson as the primary suspect. It was revealed that Jackson and another man, Benjamin Jerome Murphy Jr., had been planning to rob someone that night, and Brewster, who was known for being well-dressed and carrying cash, became their target. In the days following the shooting, Jackson fled Macon, leading to a multi-state manhunt. He was eventually apprehended in North Augusta, South Carolina, by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Fugitive Task Force. Sandra Thomas, who was with Jackson at the time of his arrest, was also taken into custody for hindering his apprehension.

Quentin Mccorey Jackson was charged with a litany of offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, and violations of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. During his trial, witnesses testified that Jackson had threatened them to ensure their silence. One woman recounted being struck in the face with a metal object by Jackson, while another witness described being threatened at gunpoint. Further evidence presented included recorded jailhouse phone calls in which Jackson and others were heard intimidating Murphy, warning him not to testify. In August 2018, a Bibb County jury found Jackson guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 45 years. The case against Benjamin Jerome Murphy Jr. remains pending in Bibb County Superior Court.
