In the early morning hours of an October Thursday in Albany, Georgia, violence shattered the pre-dawn quiet. Dexter Cartez Covin, a 43-year-old Black man, was found lying in the yard of a residence on East Road, having suffered two gunshot wounds to his chest and another to his head. First responders arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m. on October 13, 2016, to find Mr. Covin unresponsive. He was rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that day.
Another man, 47-year-old L.C. Tumblin Jr., was also discovered at the scene, lying on the porch with multiple gunshot wounds. He too was transported to the hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the following Monday. The incident left the East Albany neighborhood shaken and concerned about the violence that had unfolded.
In the days following the double homicide, the Albany Police Department's investigation led them to a person of interest. They publicly sought assistance in locating 40-year-old Trevis Lavell Price, who was wanted for murder, aggravated assault, and other related charges in connection with the fatal shootings. Authorities cautioned that Price should be considered armed and dangerous.
The search for Price concluded when he turned himself in to the authorities on the Tuesday following the incident. After being questioned by robbery/homicide detectives, Trevis Lavell Price was formally charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Dexter Cartez Covin and L.C. Tumblin Jr.
