In the summer of 2020, the city of Albany, Georgia, was rocked by the violent death of a local businessman. Nicholas Vardikos, an 84-year-old white male, was found deceased inside his business, USA Restaurant Equipment, on June 30, 2020. An autopsy would later reveal that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and authorities immediately began investigating his death as a homicide. The incident was the sixth homicide in the Albany/Dougherty County area that year.
For nearly three years, the case remained a mystery, leaving the community and Vardikos's family searching for answers. The investigation, led by the Albany Police Department, eventually pointed to a suspect surprisingly close to the victim. In a tragic turn of events, the evidence gathered by law enforcement led them to believe that the crime was an inside job, having occurred during an armed robbery.
In July of 2023, a significant breakthrough was made in the cold case. Erelah Vardikos, the 49-year-old daughter of Nicholas Vardikos, was arrested and charged in connection with her father's murder. The charges brought against her were severe, including murder, armed robbery, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy to commit a crime. Following her arrest, Erelah Vardikos was taken into custody and held at the Dougherty County Jail to await further legal proceedings. The arrest brought a sense of closure to some, but also cast a somber light on the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who had been a fixture in the local business community.
