In a tragic turn of events that unfolded on a Saturday afternoon in Albany, Georgia, a young man lost his life, sparking a significant police investigation that would lead to multiple arrests. The incident began around 1:37 p.m. on March 4, 2017, near the intersection of Dervan Street and South Jackson Street, where 21-year-old John Lewis Junior was shot. He succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head the following day, a Sunday morning, while at the hospital.
Responding officers discovered Lewis in the driver's seat of a gray Nissan Frontier that had come to a stop between three large trees. An officer on the scene saw three males running from the area. The investigation into the shooting, which was believed by the Dougherty County district attorney to be gang-related, soon led to a series of arrests.
The first breakthrough in the case came on March 9, when a 15-year-old, Jarod Hosley, was taken into custody and charged with murder. The investigation continued to unfold, and within a week, more suspects were apprehended. Eric “Booney” Davis, 20, and Markell Brown, 26, were arrested and both faced charges of felony murder. Another individual, 23-year-old Vontravious Jones, who was also wanted for felony murder, was picked up by the Albany Police Department's gang unit for questioning.
In the days following the initial arrests, the Albany Police Department continued their search for two additional suspects wanted in connection with the fatal shooting. The individuals sought were 24-year-old Jamariuos Wright and 26-year-old David Luke, both of whom were wanted on charges of felony murder.
