On the morning of January 16, 2017, in Columbus, Georgia, 17-year-old Destiny Nelson was in her apartment at the Bull Creek Apartment complex when an unknown individual knocked on her door. When the door remained closed, multiple gunshots were fired through it, striking and killing the high school honors student. Nelson was a promising eleventh-grader at the Early College Academy, where she was dually enrolled at Columbus State University.
She was the vice president of her junior class and was active in the prom committee, debate team, National Junior Honors Society, the National Scholars Honor Society, and Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Investigators with the Columbus Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was likely a tragic case of mistaken identity. They believed the perpetrators were carrying out a gang-related retaliatory attack and had simply gone to the wrong apartment. Destiny Nelson had no known ties to any gang activity. The intended target of the violence was likely someone else, and she was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of a conflict she had no part in.
For years, the case remained unsolved, prompting law enforcement to seek the public's help. The Columbus Police Department and the FBI offered a combined reward for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The case gained renewed attention, and investigators continued to pursue leads.
In January 2021, a significant breakthrough occurred in the investigation. The Columbus Police Department announced that they had charged Kiana Latrice James, who was 19 at the time the warrant was issued, in connection with Destiny Nelson's murder. At the time of the charges, James was already incarcerated in the Muscogee County Jail on a separate, unrelated murder charge. The arrest brought a long-awaited sense of potential closure to a community that had been shaken by the senseless death of a bright and promising young woman.
