In the winter of 2017, the quiet community of Waynesboro, Georgia, was shaken by a violent home invasion that claimed the life of 64-year-old Eddie Louis Grubbs. On the evening of January 23rd, two men forced their way into a residence on River Road, opening fire and forever altering the lives of those inside. Grubbs, along with 65-year-old Marshall Jordan, were fatally wounded in the attack. A third man, Walter Smith, who was 65 at the time, was also shot but survived his injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led law enforcement to identify a suspect. Quame Lamar Collins, who was 26 years old at the time of the incident, was named as the individual wanted in connection with the fatal shootings. A search for Collins ensued, involving the Burke County Sheriff's Office, who utilized their newly acquired K-9 unit to aid in the search of various residences. The manhunt for Collins concluded in March 2017 when he was apprehended in New York by U.S. Marshals.
Following his arrest, Quame Lamar Collins faced a total of 10 felony charges for his role in the deaths of Grubbs and Jordan, and the assault on Smith. In June 2021, Collins was sentenced for the crimes he committed. A judge handed down two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders. In addition to the life sentences, Collins also received further penalties for charges of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, with all sentences to run consecutively. At the time of the murders, Collins was on probation for a prior offense.
