In the early morning hours of April 14, 2014, the life of 26-year-old Mandrekgus Delvin Bonner was cut short in a hail of gunfire. The male victim was found shot to death in the driveway of his own home on East 11th Street in Waynesboro, Georgia. What initially appeared to be a drive-by shooting unfolded into a larger, more complex investigation that would ultimately point to a chaotic gun battle. Bonner's friend, 25-year-old Keleon Burdette, was also struck by bullets during the incident but survived his injuries. The shooting was not contained, as stray bullets damaged neighboring homes, a daycare center, and at least two vehicles, painting a picture of a dangerous and widespread exchange of fire.
The investigation that followed was extensive, culminating in a series of arrests three and a half months later. In a coordinated effort on July 25, 2014, a team of at least 30 officers from multiple agencies, including the Waynesboro Police Department, Burke County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, began serving warrants. This resulted in charges against eleven individuals who were all deemed to have been involved in the incident in some capacity. Eight of these individuals faced the most serious charge of felony murder.
A grand jury later returned 'true bills' of indictment against eight men for the murder of Mandrekgus Delvin Bonner. The indicted suspects were Keleon Dequan Burdette, Quame Lamar Collins, Levonta Trenard Cooper, Shaquille Rashad Freeman, Joseph Bennett IV, Ricky Lindell Hughes, Travis Antonio Walker, and Terrance Brown. Each was charged with two counts of murder, with one count indicating premeditated malice and the other pointing to Bonner's death occurring during the commission of an aggravated assault. The indictment described the event as a 'gun battle' where the suspects fired weapons at each other, tragically resulting in Bonner's death. In addition to the murder charges, the men also faced charges for aggravated assault against Burdette and for the property damage caused by the stray bullets. While most of the suspects were apprehended, Terrance Brown remained at large and was considered armed and dangerous. The seven suspects who were jailed were denied bond as they awaited further court proceedings.
