In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Athens, Georgia, a dispute fueled by alcohol and jealousy culminated in the tragic death of 43-year-old Tony Curtis Foster Jr. on March 5, 2017. The night began at the Blue Moon club on Linda Avenue, where Foster was spending time with his girlfriend. The situation escalated when her estranged husband, 53-year-old Tommy Lee Morris, arrived and confronted the couple.
The argument between the two men spilled out into the parking lot.
Morris then went to his vehicle and retrieved an assault-style rifle. He opened fire on Foster, shooting him numerous times. Even after Foster collapsed to the ground from the initial volley of bullets, Morris stood over him and continued to fire, inflicting more than 20 gunshot wounds. When police officers arrived just after 10:30 p.m., they found Foster deceased at the scene.
Immediately following the shooting, Morris fled into the nearby woods in an attempt to hide from law enforcement. However, he was quickly located and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder for the death of Tony Curtis Foster Jr. The investigation revealed a history of conflict between the two men stemming from Foster's relationship with Morris's estranged wife.
In August 2018, Tommy Lee Morris stood trial for the murder. His defense team argued that he had acted in self-defense, a claim that was ultimately rejected by the jury. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 15 years. Morris later appealed his conviction, but the Georgia Supreme Court upheld the original verdict in November 2020, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions on that fatal night.
