In the early hours of April 24, 2017, tragedy struck in Savannah, Georgia, claiming the life of 31-year-old Courtney A. German, a male native of the city. He was discovered inside a residence on East 31st Street, the victim of a triple homicide alongside 18-year-old Shayla Curtis and 24-year-old William Mullins. All three had succumbed to gunshot injuries in what investigators determined was not a random act of violence.
Courtney, known as a graduate of Windsor Forest High School, had furthered his education to become a certified HVAC technician and was pursuing a degree in Business Management. He was an assistant manager at a local Wendy's and was a member of St. Benedict the Moore Catholic Church. His life, along with the lives of the two other young victims, was cut short in a violent encounter that shook the community.
The investigation into the triple murder led authorities to Keith Lamont Maro. Evidence found at the scene, including shell casings and fingerprints, linked Maro to the crime. Following his arrest, Maro admitted to the shootings. He claimed that he had acted out of self-defense, stating that paranoia and fear brought on by drug use had prompted his actions.
Despite his claims, the legal process moved forward. Keith Lamont Maro was tried and convicted for the murders of Courtney German, William Mullins, and Shayla Curtis. He was sentenced to multiple life sentences for the killings. In a subsequent appeal, the Georgia Supreme Court reviewed the case and ultimately upheld the convictions, rejecting Maro's self-defense argument and ensuring he would remain incarcerated for the deaths of the three individuals.
