In the early evening of December 4, 2022, a shooting shattered the quiet of a Savannah, Georgia neighborhood, leaving one man dead and two others wounded. The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Kevin Johnson. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 800 block of W. 38th Street, at the intersection with Bulloch Street.
When Savannah Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two victims who were then transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center. A third victim, who was later identified as Johnson, had already been taken to the same hospital by a private vehicle. Despite medical efforts, Kevin Johnson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two victims of the shooting, a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was treated for a graze wound.
The investigation into the triple shooting led to an arrest just over a week later. On December 14, 2022, the Savannah Police Department announced that 24-year-old Joe Burke had been taken into custody and booked into the Chatham County jail. He faced serious charges in connection with the incident, including one count of murder for the death of Kevin Johnson and two counts of aggravated assault.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting and a potential motive have not been widely publicized as the investigation continues. Authorities have clarified that this fatal shooting was unrelated to another homicide that had occurred in the same location just two days prior.
