Shep Morrell, a 72-year-old male, died on June 23, 2017, in Savannah, Georgia, from a gunshot wound. His death occurred during the execution of a search warrant by the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's SWAT team and the Chatham Narcotics Team at a residence located at 512A W 38th St.
During the law enforcement operation, authorities utilized distraction devices and non-lethal Pepperball projectiles.
It was determined by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which was called in to investigate the incident, that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons. The gunfire that resulted in Morrell's death originated from inside the residence before officers made entry. Another individual, James Miller, 46, was also wounded by the gunfire but his injuries were not life-threatening. Both Morrell and Miller were transported to Memorial University Medical Center, where Morrell succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation into the shooting, authorities arrested another individual present in the home at the time of the incident. This individual was subsequently charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Shep Morrell.
