In the late evening hours of August 13, 2017, the life of Stanley Smylie, a 35-year-old African American man from Riverdale, Georgia, was tragically cut short. His body was discovered behind the wheel of his car, which was still running, in the 2000 block of Knight Court in College Park, a community in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Mr. Smylie had sustained an apparent gunshot wound.
The Clayton County Police Department began their investigation after receiving calls about gunshots in
the vicinity around 10:21 p.m. A subsequent call just over an hour later reported a suspicious vehicle with an unresponsive man inside, which led officers to the discovery of Mr. Smylie. Detectives from the Clayton County Police Department treated the case as a homicide and canvassed the area for potential witnesses and any information that could shed light on the circumstances leading to his death.
Despite their efforts, investigators were unable to immediately identify any suspects in the shooting. Authorities urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta in an effort to bring those responsible for Stanley Smylie's death to justice. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the murder. The case remains an open and active investigation, with law enforcement continuing to seek leads that may help solve the crime. Funeral services for Mr. Smylie were held on August 26, 2017, at the New Love Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta.
