On a tragic day in May of 2018, the life of 23-year-old Hope Dawson of Jonesboro, Georgia, was cut short. She was discovered in a west Atlanta bedroom on May 4th, the victim of a triple shooting that also claimed the lives of 38-year-old Jocelyn Shepherd and 38-year-old Norris Lowe, both from Atlanta. The young Black woman's death left her family and community in deep mourning.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene on Newman Place NW to find the three individuals deceased from
gunshot wounds. The preliminary investigation led police to believe that the incident was contained within the bedroom and that all three individuals knew one another. While the authorities did not definitively label the event a murder-suicide, they did state that they were not actively searching for any suspects.
The narrative surrounding the deaths became more complex as conflicting stories emerged from the families of the deceased. The mother of one of the female victims told reporters that her daughter had been attempting to escape an abusive relationship with Lowe and that the other woman was there to provide support. She alleged that Lowe was responsible for the deaths of both women. In stark contrast, Lowe's family described him as a good man who would have been incapable of such violence.
Despite the competing narratives and the lingering questions, the investigation did not lead to any arrests, as the primary individual of interest was also deceased. The case highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew and loved Hope Dawson. Her funeral services were held on May 12, 2018, at Oak Park Church in Jonesboro, as her loved ones gathered to remember a life ended far too soon.
