In the early morning hours of August 7, 2018, in Glennville, Georgia, the life of 18-year-old Malik Sayeed Murphy was tragically cut short. A student-athlete at Tattnall County High School, he was known for his love of track and field and football. He was an honor student with aspirations of attending Augusta University to pursue a degree in dentistry while continuing his athletic career.
On that Tuesday, at approximately 2:30 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call regarding a
shooting at a residence on North Herrington Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a violent scene. Two other individuals, David and Lesley Murphy, were found outside the home with gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Inside the residence, authorities found Malik Sayeed Murphy deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Also present at the scene was 36-year-old Renata Files. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into the triple shooting and homicide.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicated that Files was responsible for the shooting death of Malik Murphy and the injuries sustained by David and Lesley Murphy. It was announced that murder and other charges against Files were forthcoming. An autopsy for Malik was scheduled to be performed at the GBI crime lab in Savannah.
