In the autumn of 2018, the life of 16-year-old Kendrick Davis, a Black male, was cut short in a burst of violence on a Macon, Georgia street. On the night of October 30th, while walking near the intersection of Warpath Road and Manson Road, a dark-colored vehicle drove by, and multiple gunshots were fired at the teenager. Davis was struck several times and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital just after midnight.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office immediately began a homicide investigation.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. They believed the motive behind the killing was an argument over a girl. This belief led them to a group of local teenagers and young men. The day after the shooting, on October 31st, the first arrests were made. Eighteen-year-old Jamon Jackson and his 16-year-old cousin, Troy Jackson, were taken into custody and charged with Kendrick Davis's murder. The investigation continued to unfold rapidly, and in the following weeks, three more suspects were apprehended. Demarkis Hammonds, 19, was arrested on November 5th, followed by 16-year-old Eric Bowden on November 9th. The fifth and final suspect, 19-year-old Cortavius Ates, was arrested on November 20, 2018.
In January 2019, a Bibb County grand jury returned indictments against all five individuals, charging each with one count of felony murder. The case was set to move forward to trial, with the five suspects facing the possibility of life in prison. However, the path to justice took a dark and violent turn for two of the accused before they could be tried. On February 10, 2024, Cortavius Ates was found shot to death in Macon. A separate and unrelated homicide claimed the life of another of the accused when Jamon Jackson was fatally shot at a gas station in September 2023. The legal outcomes for the remaining three defendants, Troy Jackson, Demarkis Hammonds, and Eric Bowden, in connection with the death of Kendrick Davis are not publicly documented.
