In the warm summer evening of June 17, 2018, the sound of laughter and music filled the air at a cookout on Edgewood Drive in South Macon, Georgia. Among those enjoying the gathering was 16-year-old Calvin Bernard Harvey, a Black male known to his friends as 'Chop.' A rising junior at Northeast High School, he was being raised by his grandmother along with many other grandchildren. The celebration, however, was tragically cut short just after 12:30 a.m. when a vehicle drove by and unleashed a hail of bullets into the crowd.
When the chaos subsided, Calvin was found on the stoop with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three other individuals, a 13-year-old female, a 23-year-old man, and a 25-year-old woman, also sustained minor injuries during the drive-by shooting. The vehicle and the individuals inside fled before law enforcement arrived. The sudden violence left a community in shock and a grandmother mourning the loss of a second grandson to gun violence within a year.
The investigation into the senseless killing of Calvin Bernard Harvey led authorities to a suspect two months later. On August 17, 2018, Bibb County Sheriff's investigators arrested 15-year-old Sharmarian “Bobby” Chatfield in connection with the homicide. Chatfield was taken into custody and booked into the Macon Regional Detention Center on the charge of murder.
