In the winter of 2023, a trip to a fast-food restaurant in Macon, Georgia, turned fatal for a 60-year-old man from Dublin. Robert Clayton Wells was shot and killed just after 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, while inside his truck in the parking lot of the Mrs. Winners on Pio Nono Avenue. Emergency services arrived to find him in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene described the suspect as a male wearing all-black clothing who fled into a wooded area behind the restaurant following the shooting. The investigation quickly led law enforcement to a suspect. Later that same night, a joint task force including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and the Bibb County Special Investigations Unit located and arrested 21-year-old Alonzo Bernard Hicks at an extended-stay hotel on Eisenhower Parkway.
Hicks was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Robert Wells. During his initial court appearance, details from an arrest warrant alleged that Hicks approached Wells with a 9mm handgun pointed at him. He was ordered to be held without bond at the Bibb County Jail.
