In a tragic turn of events on a Thursday night in Macon, Georgia, 17-year-old Joseph Woolfolk III, a male high school student, lost his life. On April 9, 2020, Bibb County sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a person shot in the 1600 block of Winston Drive just before 10:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered two male teenagers with gunshot wounds.
Woolfolk was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. The second individual, a 16-year-old, was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. Woolfolk was a former student at Windsor Academy, where he was a member of the football and basketball teams. He also played basketball for Rutland High School and was a star player for his Amateur Athletic Union team.
Initially considered a victim, the 16-year-old, identified as Jieyre Chavis-Moore, was later implicated in Woolfolk's death following further investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, and it was decided that he would be charged as an adult. The investigation, which determined the incident was related to an illegal drug transaction, led to two more arrests the following day.
On Friday, April 10, 2020, Bibb County sheriff's investigators, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended 22-year-old Dalton Lee Spires and 17-year-old Xavier Jamal Lewis. Spires was charged with murder and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, while Lewis was charged with murder. Both Chavis-Moore and Lewis were transported to the Macon Regional Youth Detention Center, and Spires was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. All three were held without bond.
