In the summer of 2022, on July 15th, a burst of gunfire on Carlisle Avenue in Macon, Georgia, tragically cut short the life of 17-year-old Tyreek Demontez Young. Responding to the incident, Bibb County Sheriff's deputies discovered the young male in the roadway, critically wounded by a gunshot. He was rushed to Atrium Health, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased in the early evening. Another male, an 18-year-old who was with Young, was also struck by gunfire, sustaining a wound to his lower leg but was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into the death of Tyreek Young led authorities to two individuals who were already in custody in connection with a stolen vehicle case. On September 7, 2022, Bibb County deputies had apprehended four males after a foot pursuit, following the report of a stolen car that had been left running at a store on Napier Avenue. During the investigation into the auto theft, two of those individuals were identified as suspects in Young's death.
Investigators with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office subsequently served arrest warrants for the charge of murder to the two suspects while they were still in custody. One of the accused was a 16-year-old male juvenile who was being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center. The second suspect was identified as 17-year-old Jaquavious Jamal Scott. In addition to the murder charge, Scott faced a litany of other charges, including Aggravated Assault, Giving a False Name, three counts of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property-Felony, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Cruelty to Animals, and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers. He was held at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center without bond.
