In the spring of 1983, the community of Macon, Georgia, was shaken by the tragic death of Euel Thomas Smith Sr., a 36-year-old white male who served as a dedicated police officer. Known affectionately as 'Bubba' to his colleagues, he was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served in the Vietnam War before joining the Bibb County Board of Education Police Department, where he had worked for 11 years.
His commitment to protecting the students and staff at Central High School was well-known, and he was a familiar and caring presence on campus.
On Friday, April 22, 1983, Officer Smith was on duty at Central High School when he encountered a man on campus. While transporting the individual, a struggle ensued, and Officer Smith was tragically shot and killed with his own service weapon. The incident, which was witnessed by hundreds of students, highlighted severe deficiencies in the school police department's procedures. At the time, officers were not permitted to handcuff individuals they were transporting to the principal's office, a policy that proved to have fatal consequences.
The man responsible for Officer Smith's death was described as dangerously mentally ill and had reportedly been stopped for similar behavior just weeks prior to the fatal encounter. Following the shooting, the suspect was arrested and was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The death of Officer Smith served as a catalyst for significant changes within the Bibb County Board of Education Police Department, leading to improved safety protocols, updated use-of-force policies, and better equipment for officers, including security holsters and body armor.
In the years following his death, Officer Smith's sacrifice was not forgotten. Though it took time, his memory was formally honored in November 2013 when the Bibb County Campus Police Department headquarters was renamed in his honor, ensuring that his dedication and the ultimate price he paid to protect the children of Bibb County would be remembered for generations to come. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
