In the summer of 2019, a festive block party in Macon, Georgia, descended into a scene of chaos and violence that would ultimately claim the life of 25-year-old Gerald Pennyman Jr. On the night of Saturday, June 1st, gunfire erupted at a large gathering on Suzanne Drive, an event that would later be described by the Bibb County Sheriff as part of a 'Saturday of mayhem and destruction.' In the midst of the pandemonium, Pennyman was struck by a bullet to the head.
He was rushed from the scene by friends in a private vehicle as emergency services were overwhelmed by the night's events. For three days, he fought for his life at the Medical Center, Navicent Health, before succumbing to his injuries on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4, 2019.
The block party where Pennyman was fatally wounded was not an isolated incident. That same night, another young man, 22-year-old Deroderick Ridley, was shot and killed in a separate but related shooting at a parking lot off Log Cabin Drive and Hillcrest Avenue. The wave of violence left a total of five people with gunshot wounds. The investigation into the widespread violence was complex, with law enforcement recovering over 200 shell casings from the scene of the block party alone, indicating the sheer scale of the gunfire that had broken out among the crowd of several hundred people.
In the aftermath of the violent weekend, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office launched an intensive investigation. While the community mourned the loss of two young men, authorities worked to bring those responsible to justice. The investigation into the death of Deroderick Ridley led to the arrest of two suspects. One of the men, Brandon Tyler, was later convicted of felony murder, malice murder, and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting that killed Ridley and wounded another individual. He was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 20 years. A second man, Kenyatta Sharroid Jones Jr., was also arrested and faced murder charges in Ridley's death.
