In the early morning hours of July 24, 2021, a large fight on a sidewalk at the corner of Cherry Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Macon, Georgia, escalated into deadly violence. Amid the chaos, gunshots rang out, leaving 20-year-old Donovan Munir Cason and 21-year-old Kabryan Johnson with fatal injuries. When law enforcement and emergency personnel arrived at the scene around 12:41 a.m., they found Cason unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was transported to a local hospital, where he too was pronounced deceased. The incident also left two other individuals, a 20-year-old male and a 20-year-old female, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Another man, 21-year-old Fuquan Conner, was hospitalized in critical condition.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to identify 22-year-old Jacorey Keshawn Meadows as the suspect. On August 17, 2021, Meadows was apprehended in an Atlanta apartment complex by a team of Bibb County Sheriff's Office investigators, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals. He was taken into custody without incident and transported back to Macon for questioning.
Meadows was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and five counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. He was also served with warrants for an unrelated incident, which included three counts of aggravated assault, theft by taking, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of marijuana. He is currently being held without bond at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
As the case prepared to go to trial in February 2025, the Macon-Bibb County District Attorney's Office issued a public plea for assistance in locating a 'crucial' witness, Joshua Cason. A $500 reward was offered for information leading to his whereabouts, as his testimony is considered vital to the prosecution's case against Meadows. The trial was still scheduled to proceed, pending a judge's decision on a potential delay requested by the prosecution. The bar near the scene of the shooting, the Thirsty Turtle, has since closed after surrendering its liquor license following this and another violent incident.
