In the late hours of a March night in 2019, the life of 31-year-old JaMichael Jarrod Walker, a Black male from Swainsboro, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On March 27th, sometime around midnight, law enforcement responded to a call of a gunshot victim at a business known as Gilley's on Gumlog Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered Walker lying outside, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed was a collaborative effort between the Swainsboro Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Middle Judicial Circuit's District Attorney's Office. For months, investigators diligently worked to piece together the evidence from that fatal night. Their efforts culminated on December 4, 2019, when warrants were secured for the arrest of two men, Da'Korey Somerville and Jerel Bostic, on charges of felony murder.
The apprehension of the suspects came swiftly. Later that same day, Somerville was located and taken into custody in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Bostic initially evaded capture, but turned himself in to authorities on the morning of December 5th. A third individual, Timothy Frank Wright, was later implicated in Walker's murder through witness testimony that placed him at the scene and identified him as a primary figure in the killing.
The subsequent legal proceedings revealed that the murder was connected to gang-related activities. In December 2022, all three men were sentenced for their roles in the death of JaMichael Walker. Da'Korey Damon Somerville, Jerel Akil Bostic, and Timothy Frank Wright each received life sentences for felony murder. Their sentences carried different stipulations regarding the possibility of parole. In addition to the murder charges, they were also sentenced on a range of other convictions, including armed robbery and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, bringing a close to a case that had deeply affected the Swainsboro community.
