Jamichael Kirkland, a 30-year-old Black man from Swainsboro, was killed in the early morning hours of July 3, 2021, after a night out at Bird’s Sports Bar & Lounge on South Main Street turned chaotic and deadly. According to investigators, a 911 call came in around 2:02 a.m. reporting gunfire and multiple people hurt at the bar. When officers arrived, Kirkland was found dead at the scene. Three other people — Jasmin Crawford of Statesboro, Taniya Adams of Swainsboro, and Cordaro Kirkland of Swainsboro — had also been shot. They were first taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Augusta University Health Medical Center. Authorities said the shooting appeared to have followed an altercation at the location, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Swainsboro Police Department to help unravel exactly what had happened in the parking lot and around the business that night.
The case moved quickly in its first hours. The GBI announced that Dallas Clark of Twin City had been arrested in connection with the shooting and booked into the Emanuel County Jail. Early reports said he was charged with four counts of aggravated assault, one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A local newspaper account from the days immediately after the killing also reported that Clark made a first appearance in Emanuel County Superior Court on July 6, 2021, where bond consideration was denied because of the seriousness of the charges and other warrants. In those first days, the case was still described as active and ongoing, with investigators asking the public for information while Jamichael Kirkland’s body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.
The prosecution continued for more than two years before reaching its conclusion in Emanuel County Superior Court. By September 2023, a jury had found Dallas Raymond Clark guilty not of murder as originally charged, but of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Reporting from Emanuel County Live said the court imposed a combined 65-year sentence, with the first 30 years to be served in confinement and the balance on probation. That outcome gave the case a final legal shape: an argument and burst of gunfire outside a Swainsboro bar, one man dead, three others wounded, an arrest almost immediately after the violence, and ultimately a conviction that closed one chapter of the story even as it left behind the lasting weight of Kirkland’s death in his hometown.
