The event that unfolded was not a random act of violence but the culmination of a heated altercation that escalated into a deadly shoot-out. A group of individuals had reportedly left the scene of the initial dispute, only to return armed and ready for a confrontation, which was met with return fire.
The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Eric Foreman Jr., an African American male from Swainsboro. He was discovered by responding officers lying on the edge of the roadway, having sustained a single gunshot wound to his back. Despite immediate CPR efforts by the police and subsequent transport to Emanuel Medical Center, he was pronounced dead shortly before 7:00 p.m. Known to his loved ones as 'E.J.', Eric had graduated from Metter High School earlier that year. His family remembers him as a funny and sweet-hearted person who knew how to make others feel better.
Three other men were also wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Derrick Smiley suffered a severe fracture from a gunshot to the leg, while Justin Canady was treated for a wound to his lower abdomen. A third man, Jamal Jenkins, attempted to flee the scene but required medical assistance due to significant blood loss from his injuries. All three survivors were eventually transported to a hospital in Augusta for further treatment.
Investigators from the Swainsboro Police Department and the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office descended upon the scene, which they described as a high-crime area. They recovered at least 17 spent rounds from three different caliber weapons, indicating that multiple shooters were involved.
