On November 12, 2019, 17-year-old Isaiah Martinez, a student at Cibola High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, tragically lost his life in what authorities have described as an accidental shooting. The incident occurred just after 7:30 p.m. on Meadow Lake Place Northwest, near Montaño Road and Unser Boulevard. Upon arrival, Albuquerque Police Department officers found Martinez suffering from a gunshot wound; he was promptly transported to UNM Hospital, where he was later pronounced
dead.
In the days following the incident, the community expressed profound grief over Martinez's untimely death. Friends, family, and coaches gathered at a local baseball field—an area where Martinez had spent considerable time—to hold candlelight vigils in his honor. Jeff Kindley, one of Martinez's former baseball coaches, remembered him as 'the most polite, quiet kid you'd ever hope to meet,' highlighting the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew him.
Martinez was known for his passion for sports, particularly baseball, basketball, and skateboarding. He also had a keen interest in automobiles, often impressing peers with his ability to identify various makes and models. This enthusiasm was evident in his personal project—a Nissan 350Z that he showcased at car events. His engaging personality and compassionate nature left a lasting impact on his community, as reflected in the numerous tributes and the large turnout at his memorial services.
At the time, APD's preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting was accidental. However, the department awaited further evidence, including autopsy results, to confirm this assessment. As of the latest available information, there have been no reports of arrests or charges filed in connection with Martinez's death. The case remains a poignant reminder of the importance of firearm safety and the devastating impact of accidental shootings on communities.
