In the early evening of December 28, 2020, a violent encounter unfolded on a stretch of U.S. Highway 1 in Emanuel County, Georgia. Twenty-one-year-old Dajarius Zashawn McGuire was a passenger in a car being driven by Daniqua S. Sanders. As they traveled south between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m., another vehicle began to trail them. Suddenly, occupants of the trailing car opened fire, riddling the vehicle carrying McGuire and Sanders with bullets. McGuire was struck by the gunfire and fatally wounded. The driver, Daniqua Sanders, also 21, was injured during the assault and transported by emergency services to Emanuel Medical Center, where she was treated and subsequently released.
The investigation into the shooting death of Dajarius McGuire led authorities to identify suspects believed to be acquaintances of the victims. On January 2, 2021, the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office announced that multiple arrest warrants had been issued for Jachon Tydarian Mills of Stone Mountain. The charges against Mills were severe, including Felony Murder, three counts of Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism & Prevention Act, two counts of Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Law enforcement officials also released a description of the vehicle Mills was believed to be driving at the time of the incident, a white 2009 Dodge Challenger with red stripes.
Two days after the warrants were issued, on the afternoon of January 4, 2021, Jachon Tydarian Mills surrendered himself to authorities at the Emanuel County Jail. Following his booking, he was taken for his first appearance hearing and was ordered to be held without bond. The investigation continued, and on the evening of February 16, 2021, a second suspect was apprehended. William Jammal Givens was arrested by a team of officers from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, and the Swainsboro Police Department. Givens faced charges of three counts of Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, two counts of Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony for his alleged involvement in the murder. Like Mills, Givens was also held without bond following his initial court appearance.
