In the small city of Swainsboro, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded on the evening of April 19, 2023, forever altering the lives of one family and the local community. On that day, 31-year-old Darius Tashon Johnson, a Black male, was fatally shot on New Street. The incident prompted a swift response from the Swainsboro Police Department, who arrived at the scene to find Johnson lying in the roadway with severe injuries.

Emergency medical personnel were quick to provide aid, and due to the gravity of his condition, Johnson was airlifted to Augusta University Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Johnson was a graduate of Swainsboro High School, where he had been a member of the football team and the JROTC. He had aspirations of becoming a special education teacher and a coach.

The investigation into Johnson's death led law enforcement to identify two suspects. Based on witness information, officers located an abandoned vehicle believed to have been used by the perpetrators. A K-9 unit was deployed from the vehicle's location and successfully tracked the scent of one of the suspects through an adjacent wooded area. This led to the apprehension of 57-year-old John Gibbons.

Further investigation pointed to the involvement of a second individual, 38-year-old Dwight Dietangion Nixon. A coordinated effort between the Swainsboro Police Department and the Emanuel County Sheriff's Department resulted in Nixon's arrest on April 21. Both men were charged with felony murder in connection with the shooting death of Darius Johnson.

In the ensuing legal proceedings, John Gibbons and Dwight Dietangion Nixon faced the consequences of their alleged actions. On April 21, 2023, Gibbons had his first court appearance and was formally charged with felony murder during the commission of an armed robbery, with bond being denied. Nixon's first appearance followed on April 24, where he was also charged with felony murder and denied bond. Subsequently, on April 16, 2025, John Gibbons was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the fatal shooting. Dwight Dietangion Nixon is currently awaiting sentencing.
