In the early hours of April 14, 2019, the celebratory atmosphere of a prom-related party in Adel, Georgia, was shattered by gunfire, leading to the tragic death of 18-year-old Emmanuel Whitehead. The gathering, held at a local rental hall known as The Stage, was attended by a large crowd of young people from several surrounding counties. Shortly before 1 a.m., Adel police responded to reports of shots fired at the venue, arriving to a chaotic scene with many fleeing the area.
Amid the confusion, officers discovered two gunshot victims in the vicinity. One, a 19-year-old male, was found with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of a nearby business. Emmanuel Whitehead was located at a convenience store several blocks away, also suffering from a gunshot wound. Both were transported to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, where Whitehead was pronounced dead. A third juvenile victim with minor injuries was later identified. At the time of his death, Whitehead had recently completed training as a National Guardsman.
The investigation into the shooting was led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which pointed to the incident being gang-related. In May 2021, a Cook County grand jury indicted three Valdosta men in connection with Whitehead's death: Dashay Antwan March, Ra-Shay Marquez March, and Taurian Javon Wertz. The indictment alleges that the three men are associated with the Bloods street gang.
The trio faces a 16-count indictment, including charges of felony murder, multiple counts of violating the street gang terrorism and prevention act, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of aggravated assault. By the time of the indictment, all three suspects were already in custody on other charges. The case against them is set to proceed through the Georgia court system.
