In the summer of 2019, on a June evening in Savannah, Georgia, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on Damascus Street, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. When the Savannah Police Department officers arrived around 9:40 p.m., they discovered four men suffering from gunshot wounds. Among them was 27-year-old Devonte Henneghan, a male resident of Georgia, who, along with another man, would not survive their injuries.
The shooting, which occurred on June 11, 2019, also claimed the life of 30-year-old James Fields Jr. Two other men, Michael McDaniel, 28, and Deonte Jones, 27, were transported to a hospital to be treated for their injuries. In the immediate aftermath, detectives from the Savannah Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the deadly encounter. While the investigation was active and ongoing, authorities stated that the incident did not appear to be a random act of violence.
Just over two weeks later, on June 27, 2019, a significant development was made in the case. The Savannah Police Department announced the arrest of 29-year-old Derek Gallop Jr. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder in connection with the double homicide. Despite this arrest, the investigation was said to remain active as authorities continued to seek information from the public regarding the fatal shooting that cut short the lives of Devonte Henneghan and James Fields Jr.
