In a tragic turn of events that unfolded near the Floyd and Chattooga County line in the Holland community, Joe Edward Brown, a 35-year-old male from Rome, Georgia, lost his life on August 27, 2019. The incident, a triple shooting, also claimed the lives of his 61-year-old mother, Linda Mae Everett, and 46-year-old Daryl Marsh.
The violence erupted when Steven James Mauldin opened fire, resulting in the immediate deaths of Brown and his mother. Following the shooting, Mauldin fled the scene, instigating a multi-state manhunt. His escape involved the kidnapping of an ex-girlfriend with whom he traveled to Alabama.
Law enforcement officials eventually tracked down and captured Mauldin in Coweta County, Georgia. He faced multiple charges, including murder, in connection with the deaths of Joe Edward Brown, Linda Mae Everett, and Daryl Marsh. The subsequent legal proceedings saw Steven James Mauldin plead guilty to the murders. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the families of the victims.
