In the spring of 2002, the discovery of a man's body in a wooded area of an upscale Atlanta suburb began to unravel a story of love, jealousy, and a meticulously planned murder. On the evening of April 12, a couple walking their dog stumbled upon the remains of 45-year-old Bobby Jackson, a local MARTA bus driver. The man, a father and an Atlanta native, was found wrapped in a quilt and bound extensively with silver duct tape, which covered his entire head and face, leaving only an ear exposed.
His hands were tied behind his back, and his feet were also bound.
An autopsy would later reveal the brutal nature of his death. Jackson had suffered cuts and abrasions to his head and face, and there were signs of strangulation, including a broken bone in his neck and hemorrhaging. The official cause of death was determined to be ligature strangulation with upper airway obstruction. It was clear to investigators that he had been severely beaten before his death. The personal nature of the crime was underscored by the fact that a distinctive lion's head ring and a cherished necklace that Jackson always wore were missing.
The investigation into Bobby Jackson's death quickly centered on his relationships. His current romantic partner, Jessica Smith, informed detectives that Jackson had been harassed by his ex-girlfriend, Shirley Lyons. Smith recounted that on the evening of his death, Jackson had told her he was going to Lyons's home to retrieve some of his belongings. When questioned, Lyons initially denied involvement. However, during a search of her home, investigators discovered bloodstains that matched Jackson's DNA. They also found new bedding and curtains that appeared to match the quilt in which Jackson's body was found.
Confronted with the evidence, Shirley Lyons confessed to her role in the murder. In a videotaped statement, she admitted to hiring a man named Khalique Shariff to kill her ex-boyfriend and to assisting in the act. Following his arrest, Shariff also confessed to the murder, confirming that Lyons had hired him for the crime. Both were subsequently tried and convicted for the murder of Bobby Jackson, bringing a tragic end to a case that began with a grim discovery in the woods and concluded with the exposure of a deadly plot born from a past relationship.
