In the Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta, on September 2, 2023, the life of 28-year-old Cordale Julius Duncan, a Black male, was tragically cut short. The events of that day unfolded at the Magnolia Park Apartments, a complex known to residents and law enforcement for its history of safety concerns. It was there that Duncan was found with a critical gunshot wound, a violent end to what was described as a dispute with a childhood friend.
Responding to reports of gunfire, police arrived at
the apartment complex to find a chaotic scene. Duncan was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The initial investigation quickly pointed to a suspect: 29-year-old Allen Pitts, a man who had known Duncan since they were children. The two had grown up together, their bond forged on neighborhood baseball fields. That long history, however, did not prevent the tragic outcome of their final disagreement.
Pitts was arrested shortly after the shooting and initially faced a slate of serious charges, including murder and aggravated assault. The legal process that followed would ultimately see a resolution that, for some, may have felt like a hollow echo of the life that was lost. Pitts eventually pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, as well as a firearms possession charge. The court sentenced him to five years in prison, with additional time to be served on probation. As a condition of his sentence, Pitts was also required to participate in community-oriented programs, a measure aimed at fostering some form of positive change from the senseless violence that had occurred. The case, now considered solved, left a permanent void in the lives of those who knew and loved Cordale Duncan.
