In the early morning hours of October 19, 2019, the life of 21-year-old Dontavious Carter, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Atlanta's Oakland City neighborhood. Responding to a call of a person shot near the intersection of Princess Avenue and Avon Avenue, Atlanta Police officers discovered Carter's body in the street, bearing multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators at the scene suggested that the shooting may have involved more than one assailant.
Despite canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and any available surveillance footage, the immediate investigation did not lead to any arrests. At the time, police had not determined a motive for the shooting and it was unclear if Carter was an intended target or an innocent bystander caught in the violence.
The Atlanta Police Department urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and offered a reward for tips leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. However, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years following the incident.
