In a tragic turn of events on a summer evening, Christopher Brooks, a 53-year-old male, lost his life while extending a helping hand. On July 5, 2020, Brooks was at a Chevron gas station on Pryor Road in Atlanta, aiding a driver with their vehicle when gunfire erupted. He was caught in the crossfire of what was described as a triple shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were also injured in the incident.
One was grazed by a bullet and transported to a hospital, while another victim arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle.
The shooting occurred at a location already marked by recent tragedy, being across the street from the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks had been killed by a police officer the previous month. The violence at the gas station had also claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl just the day before Christopher Brooks was killed. The back-to-back shootings prompted public outcry and concern over the escalating violence in the area.
In the months following the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Christopher Brooks's death. In December 2020, Clayton County sheriff's deputies apprehended 29-year-old Jamir Walker. Deputies on patrol reportedly noticed Walker loitering suspiciously and, upon questioning, discovered he was wanted by the Atlanta police for the murder of Christopher Brooks. Walker was subsequently turned over to Atlanta homicide detectives to face charges related to the fatal shooting.
