In the spring of 2015, a violent home invasion in southwest Atlanta tragically cut short the life of 29-year-old Deontavious Wright. On March 13th, three men forced their way into Wright's apartment located in the 3800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The incident was not a random act of violence; prosecutors later revealed that Wright was a known drug dealer in the Hagos Park apartment complex.
Inside the apartment, the intruders, later identified as Larry Ivory, then 22, Tony
Rucker, 21, and Aaron Simmons, 20, proceeded to rob Wright of money, drugs, and cell phones. There were other people inside the apartment at the time of the home invasion, and their cell phones were also stolen. In a brutal escalation of the robbery, Wright was shot multiple times in the chest and head, leading to his death. Tragically, the 2-year-old child of Wright's girlfriend was present in the apartment when the fatal shooting occurred.
The Atlanta police began an investigation, and thanks to a surviving witness who identified the assailants, they were able to track down the three men responsible for the crime. The investigation revealed that Ivory, Rucker, and Simmons were members of a criminal street gang. The prosecution of the case brought to light the dangerous intersection of gang activity and the drug trade that led to this deadly encounter.
In November 2016, a Fulton County jury found Larry Ivory, Tony Rucker, and Aaron Simmons guilty of a slate of charges, including murder, home invasion, participation in criminal street gang activity, and various gun charges. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the murder of Deontavious Wright, a man whose life was violently taken in a crime that highlighted the perils of the city's criminal underworld.
