An 18-year-old African American male named Raezion “Rae Rae” Boyd, a promising rapper who had recently signed with Motown Records, was shot and killed on July 24, 2020, in Atlanta, Georgia. The incident occurred on Sunset Avenue in the northwest part of the city, where Boyd and three other individuals were ambushed by gunmen as they were exiting a vehicle.
They had just arrived to attend what was described as an illegal party being held at a short-term rental property.
The sudden burst of gunfire resulted in the tragic deaths of Boyd and his 19-year-old friend, Dashun Clark. Two other teenagers who were with them at the time sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the rideshare vehicle that brought them to the location was able to speed away from the scene unharmed. In the immediate aftermath, two suspects armed with handguns were reported to have fled before police arrived. Boyd's mother, Alicia, later stated that her son was not the type to attend parties and had been on his way to a music studio that evening. His grandmother, Crystal Boyd, expressed her belief that jealousy was the motive behind the fatal shooting, suggesting that someone close to her grandson may have been involved.
For three years, the investigation into the murders of Raezion Boyd and Dashun Clark continued without any arrests. Then, in late July 2023, a significant development occurred in the case. The South Metro SWAT unit apprehended 20-year-old Jnecos Steele-Austin at a residence in College Park. Steele-Austin was subsequently charged with multiple counts, including murder and aggravated assault, in connection with the 2020 shooting. At the time of his arrest, it was also noted that he had an existing open case in Fulton County related to nine felony counts of entering an auto. Following his arrest, the legal proceedings against Jnecos Steele-Austin commenced, though further details on the outcome of the trial and any subsequent conviction or sentencing have not been made publicly available.
