In November 2019, a celebration in Morrow, Georgia, turned into a scene of violence that ended the life of 27-year-old Juan Perez Salazar. The tragic events unfolded at a quinceañera held at the Oasis event center off Jonesboro Road. An argument broke out, escalating into a physical altercation that would ultimately prove fatal for Salazar.
During the dispute, then-17-year-old Jorge Beltran brandished a firearm. Video of the incident reportedly shows Beltran pointing the gun at Salazar's face. When Salazar attempted to swat the gun away, Beltran struck him. As others at the party tried to intervene and de-escalate the fistfight, Salazar continued to push the weapon away. Despite these attempts to defuse the situation, Beltran fired his gun at close range, striking Salazar in the chest and killing him.
Following the shooting, Jorge Beltran fled the scene but was later apprehended by Clayton County deputies and charged with murder. The investigation also led to repercussions within the Clayton County Sheriff's Office. Two deputies who had been working off-duty security at the event were terminated, and a third was demoted for their lack of action and failure to render aid to Salazar. In July 2023, a Clayton County jury found Jorge Beltran guilty of the murder of Juan Perez Salazar, rejecting his claim of self-defense.
