In the early morning hours of December 22, 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet at the intersection of West 37th and Whitaker streets in Savannah, Georgia. When police arrived at the scene around 2:15 a.m., they discovered a chaotic and tragic scene. Three people had been shot. Among them was 25-year-old Tori Jerrod Sterling, a male who was found with life-threatening injuries. Two other individuals, Georgesta Bostick, 26, and Anthony Mitchell, 33, also sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds in the incident. All three victims were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Tori Sterling succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting was launched by the Savannah Police Department. In the weeks that followed, their investigation led to the identification of several suspects. In late January 2020, authorities, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Alajuakee Chamell Solomon. He was subsequently charged with murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and a probation violation in connection with the fatal shooting. The following month, in February 2020, a second suspect, Atravien Richardson, 30, was also served with an arrest warrant for murder while he was already in custody at the Chatham County Detention Center on an unrelated matter. In addition to the murder charge, Richardson was also served with a warrant for trafficking heroin. The investigation continued, and two other men, Kevin Hamilton and Kenneth Scott, were also charged in connection with Sterling's death.
The legal proceedings for the four men charged in the death of Tori Sterling unfolded in the Chatham County justice system. The case eventually went to trial, and in a significant development in February 2023, a jury acquitted Alajuakee Chamell Solomon, Kevin Hamilton, and Kenneth Scott of all charges, including malice and felony murder. The fourth individual charged, Atravien Richardson, reached a different outcome. He accepted a plea deal for the lesser charges of aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. The verdict in the case, with three of the four accused men being cleared of the most serious charges, was met with mixed reactions and left the family of Tori Sterling with a sense of unresolved justice.
